Enyalius
The mare's steps were cautious but purposeful as they carried her up a rocky slope and onto the flatter ground of a long peninsula. She swiveled a silver ear towards the roar of crashing waves, and flared her nostrils to take in the salty breath of ocean wind, two sensations that she had a fondness for. Enyalius raised her head and let the brisk winds tussle her silver-white mane for a moment before she lowered it and nuzzled past the thin blanket of snow on the ground, searching for vegetation underneath.
The thick, muscled build of the tall, red roan mare reflected her good health, even in the midst of the Valley's harsh winter. For nine years she had called this place home, and for nine years Eny had learned the lay of the land, where to find food in what season, and... how lonely the place could be sometimes. The cove always brought her some measure of respite from the ache of solitude, but the mare longed for companionship, and her bright blue eyes were looking for the silhouette of another equine just as much as they were scanning for predators and food.
Kincaid
The snow was no challenge for the draft mix. His large hooves trod over the blanket of white as effortlessly as an arctic beast. The scent of the sea was unmistakable as he neared the bay even in the cold climate; salty, a little bit organic, and carrying a fishy smell faint enough that it did not assault his nostrils.
But there was another scent he picked up. After trekking for miles with no equine in sight, he sensed another of his kind nearby. He scanned the horizon, soon spotting her: a roan mare who appeared to be in good health despite the approaching end of a long winter. His pace quickened to reach her. He let out a small whinny as a casual greeting before closing the distance between him and the mare.
"It's been ages since I last saw another horse," he stated placidly. This mare would surely be a perfect addition to his herd, but he avoided being too forward just after meeting her. "Kincaid is the name, by the way." Although Enyalius had most if his attention, he kept a wary eye out not only for predators, but for other stallions that would dare to challenge him.
Enyalius
An ear had been directed towards the sea as she indulged in the rhythmic sound of crashing waves below, and listened for the sharp squeals and clicks of the sea wolves who she'd often see cruising the bay. She'd always been too cautious to ever approach any of them, given their immense size and teeth that looked very predatory, but they were fascinating to her nonetheless.
Today, it seemed, the pod was out in deeper waters. With a quiet sigh, Eny took a few ambling steps forward, kicking at the snow and grazing what fodder her hooves would uncover. Her ears swiveled again then, this time picking up on a new sound before the rest of her senses did. The mare raised her head abruptly, a bit of quickly melting snow falling from her lips. There, heading her direction, was a large figure that her dark eyes quickly identified as another horse.
Enyalius tensed initially, until the stallion drew close enough to offer a friendly whinny. Only then did the roan mare relax herself and return a mutual whinny to the stranger, all while eying up the fellow with curiosity and interest. "Same here, friend. I've been on my own for many seasons." She moved in a little closer yet, taking in Kincaid's scent and observing just how fit and healthy he appeared to be. When he offered his name, Eny gave a slight nod and locked friendly eyes with the male, "Enyalius. Eny for short. Have you been around these parts long? In the Valley, I mean?"
