Midnight Sky
Midnight Sky walked around the eskers. Her eyes scanned the horizon for any sign of possible prey. The hybrid lifted her cran and smelled the wind. She smelled nothing. She trotted on in hopes for a meal...
*Prey Possibilities*
A very strong, musky scent can be detected on the wind. If you follow it a ways, it will lead you to a small group of musk oxen. But you will have to get closer before finding out how many and in what condition they are in.
Along the horizon, you can see the outline of a huge caribou herd. Very faintly in your paws you can detect them moving; there are hundereds upon hundereds of them.
The high, sharp whistle of ground squirrels can be heard somewhere not too far away.
Midnight Sky
Midnight felt the hooves of caribou from beneath her paws. They were close by. She trotted on, sometimes stopping to find their scent. After a short time Midnight found a large herd. She couldn't take down a calf, because the whole herd would charge her. But a yearling would do...
*Caribou Herd*
The animals closest to Midnight Sky only give her a glancing look before continuing to graze. A few are even lying on the ground. They know a lone wolf is no threat to them if the run in time from an attack... or at least most of them are confident of this. Even the calves could outdistance a wolf with ease.
The herd seems to have groups of caribou here and there; young males and older bulls in a group, cows and calves in another, and the elder in yet another. It would take some testing of the right group to find a good target.
Midnight Sky
Midnight saw a few caribou laying down. Those would be the easiest. She walked away from the herd as if she wanted nothing to do with them, then circled back around and ran for one on the ground.
*Caribou Herd*
Seeing the wolf run forward, the targeted caribou quickly got to her feet. She began to sprint from the wolf.
Caribou around her sprinted a short distance away too, alarmed by the wolf's sudden actions. So far, none of these caribou showed any weakness.
Midnight Sky
Midnight Sky ran after the caribou. She smelled no weaknesses or sicknesses. They could easily outrun her. But a younger calf would be easy prey.
*Caribou*
The caribou in your path sprinted away to a safe distance before begining to graze again. Even the calves, who were getting older now, had the speed of the adults.
They would be easy to kill, but that's only if they were caught.
The part of the herd you are testing doesn't seem to have any weakened members. Moving to the sections that have older members may prove more rewarding...
Midnight Sky
Midnight Sky soon gave up the chase as she was outrun. She trotted over to another part of the herd hoping to have more luck there...
*Caribou*
Most seemed just as healthy. But... there was one who took just a bit longer to stand up than the rest. One of her hind limbs was held just slightly to the side. Unless she were forced to run, it was hard to tell whether this leg would make her slow and vulerable.
Midnight Sky
Midnight Sky saw the disibility. She slunk around and charged at her, hoping to get her before she could get a chance to run...
*Caribou*
The caribou saw the wolf before she ever had gotten close. Seeing the charge, she turned and began to run like the others in the herd were doing. Yet here was just the weak member that Mighdnight Sky was searching for! As she ran it quickly became apparent that one hind leg was seriously handicap in some way; perhapse infected by parasites or weakened by a fracture or wound of some type. What ever it was, it caused the caribou to be just slow enough for Midnight Sky to catch up with. Now you can leap up and make a successful attack...
Midnight Sky
Midnight ran quickly, she grabbed onto the throat of the caribou peircing the jugular.
*Caribou*
The creature crashed down into the ground with the force of the wolf's leap. Her leg was too weak to handle it. The wolf was able to sever her life vein, and within minutes, the caribou was dead.
Midnight Sky
Once the caribou had been killed, Midnight tore open the shoulder and began to eat. After she finished she dragged the caribou back to the territory.
