Kayla Anderson
Kayla walked to the pasture where the mares were kept during the days when the weather was warm enough. Today was a brisk day, a little chilly when the wind blew, but the wind was calm today so the horses were allowed out for the day. When winter came they would not be out as much.
She approached the fence of the pasture and whistled for any of the horses who would come. Even though they had a lot of horses and things that needed done she still took time daily to spend time with the horses whether it was riding them or just spending time petting them and talking to them. She waited for any of the horses to come to the fence.
Holly Dee Song
Holly was grazing with her mother. She heard the whistle and lifted her head up and yawned. As her mother moved twoard the gate so did she . Her head held high and tail slightly up as well. She was a little haughty today.
Dixi Holly's mother moved faster and came right up to the fence. She snorted and tossed her head.
Jasmine also followed a little slower though.
Kayla Anderson
Kayla smiled as she saw the approach of the three mares. The other seven mares approached as well. She reached out to stroke the face of the mare who had approached first, Dixi. She spoke to the mare in a friendly voice. Hey girl... Then the rest of the mares had reached the gate and Kayla stroked each of them who put their heads over the fence. They had a good herd here, she knew that much. Each of them was hand picked and of great quality, and they all got along well.
Dixi
Dixi had asserted herself quiet a few times and she nipped out at one of the others who tried to push her out of her spot. Her nostrils flared and her ears went back.
Holly ignored her mother. She was the only one that could get away with pushing her mother out of the spot and not end up being bit. In return she had been bullied a little.
Jasmine was completely oblivious to the going on's cause she usualy stayed away from the others.
Kayla Anderson
Kayla watched as Dixi nipped at the other mares who attempted to push her around. She did not try to do anything to correct the mare or to get her away from the others, it was just this mare's way of showing she would not be pushed around, which was something that she knew the horses would have to establish. When the other mare moved a step away she stroked her forehead and then went back to stroke Dixi once more. She had a bag of baby carrots in her jacket pocket and she placed her hand in the bag and pulled a carrot out and offered it to Dixi first and then offered one to each of the mares. She was thinking of taking a ride, and she was thinking of possibly taking out Holly. Her training had gone amazingly well and she was nearly as good a mount as the older horses.
Dixi
Dixi snorted and her ears went back to being forward once the mare had taken a step back. She sniffed at the carrot then took it. Her nostrils flared as she reached over and prodded at Kayla pocket now.
Holly took hers and backed away now and began to wander the fence in boredom.
Kayla Anderson
Kayla emptied the bag of carrots giving them to all of the mares. She then walked to the stable and grabbed Holly's lead rope and returned. She let herself in to the gate and clicked her tongue for Holly to come over. If she did then Kayla would hook the lead rope to her matching halter and lead her in to the stable to be groomed and saddled.
Holly
Holly watched her walk away and then ran toward the gate shoving her mother right out of the way. Dixi snorted at her daughter and nipped her hind end before turning and leading the rest of the herd away. Holly backed up as the gate opened and she let her clip her and then followed her trying to trot every now and then. Her ears flickered.
Kayla Anderson
Kayla was glad to see that Holly was ready to go when she returned with her lead rope. The rest of the mares walked off to resume their grazing as Kayla hooked the lead to the mare's halter. She lead Holly to the stable, pulling firmly on the lead when the mare tried to trot faster than she was walking. Once in the stable she hooked the mare to the cross ties and began to groom the dust and such from her pelt so it would not rub a sore spot under the saddle.
Holly
Holly snorted as she was tied to the cross ties one of things she didn't like. Her ears were back and she shook her head as Kayla groomed her. She pawed the ground and whinnied.
Kayla Anderson
Kayla knew that this mare did not like the cross ties, that was one of the things that she had found out since she has had her here. So, she did groom the mare rather quickly, though not moving quick enough to spook her. Once the grooming was done she grabbed the saddle she had already sat out and put it on the mare's back and then moved to put her bridle on her.
Holly
Her nostrils were flaring and her pelt quivered as the saddle pad and saddle were placed on her back. She bloated like most horses did when the girth was placed on. She didn't open her muth for the bit at first but then finally let it in. She pawed the ground.
Kayla Anderson
Kayla finished tacking up the mare and then she lead her out of the barn to the outdoor arena. It was not real cold, so they would still be out there for now. Once they reached the arena she tightened the girth again, knowing that Holly liked to bloat herself up and that would make the saddle too loose when whe was actually riding. Once she was sure that the saddle was good to go she climbed easily to the saddle, ready for Holly to act up if she would.
Holly
Sometimes holly was fine with someone on her other times she wasn't. Sure she had been trained but she had her days and today was a day she was determined to not have someone on her back. Or well maybe it was something else who knew. She snorted and at first just stood there then she bucked and snorted and tossed her head. Her ears back.
Kayla Anderson
Kayla had thought that the mare might be a brat today. She could tell from the pasture that she was in a haughty mood. On days like that she knew that the mare was very difficult to ride, so Kayla had expected for her to act up when she did. Luckily she had managed to get herself settled in the saddle before the mare had started. When the mare did begin to act up, she stayed on relatively easily. She was used to breaking in horses and the such on a normal basis so this would not be her first rough ride. She knew that after a while of Holly seeing that she was not going to let her win that she would give up, that was just how horses were.
Holly
Holly snorted as Kayla stayed on. Her tail lashed out and her ears were back as she ran the length of the arena almost purposfully colliding with the fence but sliding to a halt like a reigning horse would and then spinning around in a circle and taking off again.
Kayla Anderson
She remained calm and collected as the paint took off towards the fence, she pulled back on the mare's reigns and spoke loudly yet calmly for her to 'whoah'. Whether the mare would do as she asked or not she did not know but she would not be getting off this horse until she began acting as she was trained to or she knew that Holly would think she had won and then they would be back to square one.
Holly
When Kayla pulled back on the reigns she stopped but also rared up as high as she could go. She moved backwards on her hind legs and was threatening to fall over backwards and she did when her leg hit something and she fell. She screamed out as she landed mostly on her side. She bolted up. Her side was bleeding from scrapping against a broken piece of wood. It wasn't a bad wound though. Her ears were pinned back as she stood now fear etched on her face.
Kayla Anderson
Kayla had pulled back on the reigns to get the mare to stop, and she did. Though, when she did stop she also reared up, this Kayla was not exactly ready for. So, she was thrown from the saddle. Just as she hit the ground she saw that the paint mare was teetering and looked as if she would fall. So, she hurried to roll out of the way, despite the soreness that she felt from her landing on the ground. Then Holly fell and there was terror in her eyes as she saw the mare break the fence as she fell, causing a wound on her side. The mare bolted back up and Kayla stood up and approached the mare slowly, knowing that she would be easily spooked now, but she had to check her wound.
Holly
Holly eyes were bulging as she pawed the ground now and shook her head unsure of what to do. Then her head snapped back as Kayla approached her. Her nostrils flared and she pawed the ground again but stood where she was. Her pelt quivered.
Kayla Anderson
Kayla continued to slowly approach Holly, glad that she was not shying away, though she could see the fear in her eyes and the quivering of her pelt. She slowly took a hold of the mare's bridle and gently placed her other hand on the mare's neck as she looked over the wound. She would call the vet to come check her out as soon as she got the mare calmed down. She knew the wound was not real bad, but she still wanted the mare checked out.
Holly
Holly had also twisted her left hind leg which had been the real cause of her falling. As the pain slightly subsided in her side she began to feel the pain in her left hind and it was cocked up to relieve the pressure. She calmed down when Kayla got to her and she placed her head on her chest.
Kayla Anderson
Kayla was glad that the mare had calmed down when she reached her. She looked her over and saw that she was also favoring her left hind leg. She knew that her best bet would be to get the mare to her stall so that she had less chance of harming herself more while they waited for the vet. So, she slowly lead the mare to the barn which was not far from the arena. Once she reached the stall she let the mare in and shut the bottom half of the door. She then went to the phone in the barn and dialed the vet's number. She told the vet what had happened and the vet said that he would be right over. She then went back to Holly's stall, carrying her halter. She unhooked the mare's bridle and took it off to make her more comfortable, putting on the mare's halter instead.
Holly
Holly limped after her barely placing her left hind leg down as she walked to her stall. Her nostrils flared as she removed the bridle and placed the halter on. The saddle was much more of a bother .
Kayla Anderson
After the bridle was removed she saw that Holly was calm so she figured she could easily get in to her large stall and remove her saddle. So, she let herself in to the stall and shut the door behind her as she unhooked the saddle and lifted it off the mare's back, carrying it from the stall to the tack room before returning to Holly's stall and waiting for the vet.
holly
Holly snorted and pawed the ground now. Her nostrils flared and she shook her head. She made to reach back and attempted to lick at the wound to no avail
Vet
The vet had pulled his vehicle up to the ranch. He now approached the barn and saw Kayla standing outside a stall. The young girl greeted the vet and filled him in on what had happened. So, the vet lead the horse from the stall and Kayla held her lead rope while the vet examined her. He first cleaned the wound on her shoulder gently and put some salve on it. Then he went to examine her sore leg. He felt it over and determined that it was not broken. It seems like she has just twisted it, so just keep her in the stall for a few days and I'm going to wrap the leg, I'll come back in a few days to check it. He began to wrap the leg. All of this happened if the mare behaved.
Holly
Holly hated the vet and since it was the same vet she snorted and glared at him as if she was gonna run him down. She walked out and let him treat her shoulder however as he went to examine her leg she cow kicked with it even though it hurt. She then proceeded to move to the side to try and keep him off it. Her eyes slightly bulging.
Vet
This was the same vet who always treated the Anderson's horses, so he pretty much knew them, knowing how Holly might react to her leg being touched he was ready when she kicked out, having been standing to the side he had just hurridly moved his hands from her leg to prevent from being kicked.
Kayla kept a hold of the mare's halter as she kept talking soothingly to her, trying to calm her down so that the vet could finish his job. Though when he mentioned wrapping her leg she spoke up. I think I can handle wrapping it... He nodded and gave her the bill and the wrap then left. Kayla tied the mare's lead rope to a hand rail, hoping that she did not decided to bolt. She then walked around to the mare's leg, keeping one hand on the mare's side or rump the whole time as she walked. She then took the wrap and began wrapping the leg, if Holly would behave for her that is.
Holly
She snorted andwatched the vet leave settling down immediatly. She allowed Kayla to wrap it.
Kayla Anderson
Kayla was glad when the mare immediately calmed down as the vet left. She did not know why the vet spooked her so much, but she knew that he did. She was also happy as the mare allowed her to wrap her sore leg which she did quickly and skillfully. After all, after being around horses for so long this was something that you did quite often, as it seemed there was always the chance of one horse or another getting hurt. Speaking of hurt, her own rear end and back were throbbing from where she had hit the ground, but she knew that she would be fine, she was not the type to cry about a little bump. After the leg was wrapped she patted the mare and then walked back to her front, stroking her neck gently. Now, thats a good girl. Then she untied her lead from the hand rail and put the mare in her stall.
Holly
Holly snorted as she then just cocked the back leg off the ground. Her ears twitched and she snorted at her. Then she started stall weaving not wanting to be stuck in side..
